“Our native trees will die”
A: So I have just done the story I said before about this is what the environment looks like now with nice trees and flowers and things. And you can do a bit by pouring your bucket of water on your garden but it will be a drop in the ocean. These are the trees wilting and the flowers and then, eventually, the trees will die. They will take longer because they are deeper rooted than you know, flowers and things. But, essentially, trees especially our native trees, things like our oaks and stuff like that will die. And you can plant new ones. So this is what it will look like. You will have the dead ones and the new ones here. You can plant more drought tolerant trees but they will take 50, 100, 150 years to grow and, in the meantime, we will have a very, very different environment.
B: But oak’s quite symbolic of England, isn’t it?
A: It is. Absolutely. That’s why I said oak trees. And, also, actually we don’t have that many native trees, in the UK. So oak is, the English oak is one of the few native trees that we have.
